How to connect desktop mounted storage

Connect direct attached storage (DAS) by using the MASV Desktop App

Beta: Desktop Mounted Storage integration is currently available only in the MASV Desktop App Beta.

You can integrate MASV with mounted storage by installing the MASV Desktop App on the Windows, Mac, or Linux computer where the storage is mounted. The integration is initiated in the MASV Web App, but the connection can be managed in both the MASV Web App and the MASV Desktop App. For mounted storage, the MASV Desktop App offers a quick and easy alternative to using the MASV Agent.

This page includes the following topics:

It starts in the MASV Web App

To edit the Target Directory or Parent Folder for desktop mounted storage

To rename a desktop mounted storage integration

To delete a desktop mounted storage integration

Note: For network attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) setups, we recommend installing the MASV Agent for optimal performance. For more information, please see How to connect, edit, and remove a storage device integration

It starts in the MASV Web App

You can create and manage storage device integrations in the MASV Web App, including desktop mounted storage. When you integrate a storage device, you create a registered connection that includes an ID and Secret key. Each connection is directional, so you can create more than one connection for a storage device. For example, you can create a connection to save files to storage (write) with an inbound connection and also create a connection to send files from storage (read) with an outbound connection. The name you choose and the transfer direction display on the My Integrations page, along with the creation date and status of the connection. You can rename or delete a connection from the My Integrations page. You can also edit the relative path for your integration by changing the Target Directory and Parent Folder Options.

Tip: Portals offer custom path settings for integrations that let you append subdirectories to the path to further control where files are delivered. For more information, see How to use a MASV Portal to deliver files to integrations.

Adding UserID and GroupID

If the files that you write to a storage device need to be owned by someone other than the root user, you have the option to add user ID (uid) and/or group ID (gid). You can do this when you register your connection.

Security considerations

Connections to storage devices are protected by a Secret key, authentication processes, as well as encryption of traffic between storage and MASV.

Firewall considerations

Please review the port, host name, and IP address information to ensure your firewall is configured properly for MASV transfers: How to ensure your firewall works with MASV.

  4. In the Transfer Direction area, choose a direction:
    • Save to storage: For inbound files (Write)--MASV transfers files to the storage device.
    • Send from storage: For outbound files (Read)--MASV transfers files out of the storage device.
  5. (Optional for "Save to storage") In the Target Directory box, type a relative path that will be appended to the root Path that you set in the MASV Desktop App. You will be able to edit this subdirectory from the MASV Web App as needed.
  6. (Optional for "Save to storage") In the Parent Folder Options, leave the checkbox unselected if you want to save the files in a directory that uses the package name. To deliver directly into the Target Directory, select the checkbox.
  7. Select Next.
  8. If you do not already have the MASV Desktop App Beta installed, install the app.
  9. Select the Register in Desktop App button. The Register Integration window opens in the MASV Desktop App Beta. All the required information is pre-populated, except for path and any advanced settings. (See note below if the window does not open.)
  10. In the Path box, type a path or select the browse button and navigate to the mounted storage location you want.
  11. masv-register-integration-masv-desktop(Optional) If you need to set User ID or Group ID information, select Advanced, and enter the information you want.
  12. Select the Register button. The integration is listed on the Automations page in the MASV Desktop App.

Note: If the MASV Desktop App Beta Register Integration window does not open as expected (step 9), or opens but is not pre-populated, you can use the following method to register the connection: In the MASV Desktop App Beta, select Automations > New Automation > Connect Storage. You can then manually copy the Connection Name, ID, and Secret from the MASV Web App Register Integration window. The information you need appears when you select Button not working?
